Hi! I’m Dara, and I’m a Functional Health and Wellness Coach. Welcome!
Like you, I play many roles in life. Most importantly I’m a Mom to two awesome kiddos. I’m also a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a partner.
In my career, I’ve been an early childhood educator, worked for Functional Medicine practitioners, and created two successful businesses as a Therapeutic Personal Chef.
I’m also a human who has struggled with health issues my whole life.
I have suffered from autoimmune issues since the age of two. I saw all the doctors, tried every diet, and read all the books. With each new doctor, I would get my hopes up that it would finally be the solution to my health issues. I’d leave with a protocol, a list of supplements, prescriptions, and lots of advice. And within days I would feel overwhelmed and give up. I was in a continual cycle of feeling confused and ultimately alone on my health journey.
That’s where I was for years. And if you’re there now, I know how desperately you want to make healthy changes in your life. I know what it’s like when you’re not sure where to start or how to incorporate new behaviors. Maybe you’re wanting to lose weight (been there!). Maybe your doctor is telling you that you need to eat healthier or lower your blood pressure (done that!). Maybe you just really want to get a night of great sleep and wake up feeling well rested (I see you new Moms!). Most of all, I imagine that, like me, you want to have more energy, more motivation, and to feel more present in your own life.

How will it help me?Health coaching empowers clients! When you’re ready to be an active participant in your life and you’re ready to make change, health coaching supports you in getting what you want. Research shows that health coaching has positive effects on clients who have struggled to make changes on their own and even for those dealing with chronic health challenges. Here are some of the behaviors and outcomes my clients are more successful with: Taking action that they never considered possible (empowerment!) Overcoming obstacles or change previously considered insurmountable (confidence!) Achieving the shift in mindset associated with incremental and sustainable change (positive outlook!) Discovering lasting change after years of procrastination or trying and failing (self efficacy!) And living the life they always dreamed of! (actualization!)
What’s the difference between health coaching and counseling/therapy?The main differences in health coaching and counseling/therapy are in the approaches, education, training, and scope of practice of each profession. Counselors and therapists treat mental, emotional, and physical health issues (including addiction) with evaluations, clinical assessments, tests, diagnoses, and the creation of a care plan that may include psychotherapy, referrals, and medication recommendations. There are many paths to becoming a licensed counselor or therapist, but most involve graduate level education and require additional work experience in their particular field of study. The aim of mental health counseling is to reduce psychological and emotional distress, improve function, emotional resilience, and overall well being. Health coaches specialize in behavior change. Health Coaching approaches clients as creative, resourceful, and whole, and believes that the client is the expert of themselves. It’s a process of self discovery that includes visioning, clarifying, aligning, facilitating, empowering, generating, and implementing their self identified wellness behaviors. Health coaches utilize tools and frameworks including Positive Psychology, Coaching Psychology, Appreciative Inquiry, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Strengths Based Coaching, and so many more. Health coaches support our clients as they find their motivation for change, create goals, brainstorm strategies, and prepare for obstacles. Health coaches are credentialed and certified through various programs including (but not limited to) the National Board Certification for Health & Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWC). Health coaches do not diagnose, prescribe, or advise. *Health coaching is best suited for individuals who are functioning well in their daily lives and not experiencing serious psychological or emotional distress or crisis. Although challenged by the health or wellness issues they are experiencing, clients appropriate for health coaching are fully capable of participating in the coaching process, taking responsibility, being accountable, and making consistent progress toward their desired outcomes, even when change is hard.
